Hula Kiʻi

A visual perspective into the art form of Hula Kiʻi.

This will be a haʻi ʻōlelo on Hula Kiʻi form and function based on the hula traditions of Kumu John Keola Lake.  This presentation will go over two versions of Hula Kiʻi, one in puppet form and one in physical body form.

Students who attend this presentation will learn one Hula Kiʻi in physical body form during this presentation.

Hula Kiʻi is an uncommon dance form that embodies the rich cultural heritage and artistic expression of the kanaka maoli. In this dance, the performer uses an image or figurine, or transforms into the image. Although Hula Kiʻi is not widely known or practiced, it has been preserved and carried on by select hula traditions across the islands.

All ages are welcome.
